CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- A father and motel clerk was shot and killed during a robbery off Interstate 95 late Thursday night, according to Chesterfield Police.
Jerry Vadal Colyer, 43, of Haden Avenue in Richmond, was found dead with an apparent gunshot wound at the Econo Lodge on Indian Hill Road around 10:57 p.m. Thursday, detectives said.
Colyer was killed after a gunman entered the business, displayed a handgun, and demanded money, police said.
He got the money, but then shot Colyer even though motel manager Jay Patel said surveillance video inside the office showed Colyer never put up a fight.
"He's a really nice guy, honest, always friendly, and always smiling," Patel said. "He never had problems with anybody."
After he fired the gun, the killer ran away towards Woods Edge Road, according to police.
The shooter was described as a male, wearing a red long sleeve hooded sweatshirt, red brimmed hat, jeans, and a dark-colored belt.
Colyer was about to celebrate his one-year anniversary employed at the motel.
Patel said Colyer leaves behind a wife and a young daughter.
