RICHMOND, Va. – The U.S. Department of Education has announced their list of National Blue Ribbon Schools, and Richmond’s George Washington Carver Elementary is one of only seven Virginia schools on the list.  The Blue Ribbon Schools Program recognizes K-12 schools across the U.S. that are either academically superior or demonstrate significant gains in student achievement.

The entire list includes:

  • George W. Carver Elementary in Richmond
  • Deer Park Elementary in Newport News
  • Coeburn Middle in Wise County
  • Springfield Estates Elementary in Fairfax County
  • Green Valley Elementary in Roanoke County
  • Tunstall High in Pittsylvania County
  • Watauga Elementary in Washington County

According to Charles Pyle, the spokesman with the Virginia Department of Education,  six of the seven also earned awards earlier this year through the Virginia Index of Performance program. Carver Elementary was one of three state schools that earned the Board of Education Distinguished Achievement Award.

There are two criteria for schools to be selected to become a National Blue Ribbon School: performance on state assessments, or in the case of private schools, performance on national standardized tests and high school graduation rates; or performance in closing achievement gaps between a school’s subgroups and all students over the past five years while increasing graduation rates for each subgroup.
