HENRICO COUNTY, Va. -- A group of seniors hit the basketball court with some preschoolers Thursday morning for an event to promote Active Aging Week 2016.

The event, sponsored by CareMore Health Centers, brings young people and seniors together for an inter-generational event to showcase healthy aging.

The young and the young at heart played a competitive game of basketball inside the Deep Run Recreation Center in Henrico County.

Robert McKessor, who participated in the event, said the game was great opportunity to get out and meet some new people.

“It gets the adrenaline going and I get to meet these beautiful, beautiful people at these events and I look forward to them every year,” said the 79-year-old.

McKessor stays at a local retirement home throughout the year. He says staying active is important, that’s why he loves to participate in events like this.

“I love it here. I like doing these things,” said McKessor. “I’m just here to have a good time and bring some joy, spirit and laughter to some other folks that are here.”

Organizers say about 70 students and 80 preschoolers were there for the big game.

Active Aging Week 2016 is a national initiative that encourages those ages 50 and older to actively age in their community.
