Smith told the deputies his identification card was in his car and he left the courthouse, according to the sheriff's office.

Deputies followed Smith , and when he got into his car, he drove off striking a deputy who was standing near the vehicle.

The deputy was taken to the hospital. His injuries are considered non life-threatening.

Henrico Police said the driver was arrested in the 3600 block of Hargrove Avenue Thursday afternoon.

Smith has been charged with two counts of assault on a law enforcement officer and driving on a suspended license.

A witnesses, who asked to not be identified, claimed the suspect did not hit the deputy, but that the deputy fell to the ground when the suspect pulled off.

That same witness added it was "dumb" to run from the police for a failure to appear charge.
