Tropical Storm Matthew forms, may become major hurricane

Posted

RICHMOND, Va. — A disturbance that has been watched for quite a few days became Tropical Storm Matthew just before 11 a.m. Wednesday near St. Lucia.  Matthew will track westward over the next few days.  It is in an area of very warm ocean water, and if it does not encounter a lot of wind shear, may rapidly develop into a strong hurricane.

The forecast path from the National Hurricane Center brings the storm to near Jamaica as possibly a category 2 hurricane with winds over 100 mph by Monday morning.

The path of Matthew after that point is still very uncertain.  Our computer models have the Gulf coast and the east coast as potential targets later next week.  We will continue to update the forecast path frequently over the coming week.  More details can be found in the CBS Hurricane Tracker.
