CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- Friday will be a night two Chesterfield County students will never forget.
Isabelle Rubinos and her sister Jasmin received a surprise of a lifetime when their father, who's been overseas for nearly a year, surprised them on the field at Manchester High school’s football game.
The senior cheerleader and Jasmin were chosen to take part in the coin toss before the game. That’s when Sergeant First Class Jerry Rubinos surprised the girls, who literally leapt into his arms.
“Their facial expressions were priceless,” said Sgt. Rubinos.
“I just went over there and hugged him. It felt really good,” Jasmine said. “I didn’t think I would see him for the longest time. He told me his paper got messed up and he would be here for a while…. Now he’s here and everything’s OK.”
After the emotion reunion, Sgt. Rubinos was able to do the coin toss and keep the coin as a memento.
Sgt. Rubinos has spent the past 11 months in Afghanistan, a tour which was only supposed to last nine months. His tour is now over.
He said he’s been planning the emotional surprise for over a week now with the school. The special moment was a part of Manchester’s Second Annual Military Appreciation Night.
