HENRICO COUNTY, Va. -- A Henrico County school bus ended up in a ditch on Larcom Lane Thursday morning after the school bus driver suffered a medical emergency behind the wheel.

Initial reports indicated no students on the bus were hurt, according to Henrico Schools spokesman Andy Jenks.

One adult, the school bus driver, was transported to the hospital, Henrico Fire spokesman Capt. Taylor Goodman said.

The driver's condition was not released.

A second adult was on the school bus when the school bus driver experienced that medical emergency, Jenks said. Police say that adult was able to take control of the bus and steer it off the road.

That adult helped get all the children off the bus and safely away from traffic.

The bus was headed to nearby Tuckahoe Elementary School at the time of the incident.

Kate Gardner’s twin 5th graders were on the bus.

"It could've been a lot worse. I feel very lucky.  I feel like we totally lucked out,” said Gardner.

Gardner says her kids were fine and went to school as scheduled.

"They were shaky. The principal and vice principal were here. And the kids were all relatively calm and parents were here. They did a great job and had another bus come and get the kids back on another bus,” explained Gardner.

Henrico Fire was alerted to the situation at about 7:28 a.m.
