FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. — A missing man and subject of a statewide senior alert was found alive Wednesday about 160 miles from home.

James Rufus Thompson, 78, was last seen on Monday, September 12 around 10 p.m. in Fairfax, Virginia. Virginia State Police issued a statewide senior alert Tuesday night when a local search for Thompson proved fruitless. Police said Thompson’s disappearance posed a credible threat to his health and safety because he suffered from a cognitive impairment.

The alert for Thompson was cancelled Wednesday morning after he was found safe about 160 miles from home in Sussex, Virginia.

Details about his recovery were not released.
