RICHMOND, Va. — Ellwood Thompson’s was recently named top grocery store in Virginia. The market has been open since 1989, though in its first incarnation – as City Market –it was located on Patterson Avenue.
The Richmond institution has been situated at its namesake streets since 1993.
A new shopper would barely recognize the store in its early inception, when it occupied just one tiny section of the strip mall.
A Blockbuster operated from the left side, where the Beet Café is now located. A yoga studio and laundromat took up the right side of the building, where bulk, produce, and health and beauty products stand.
But over the decades, the store gracefully transitioned, expanding as other shops moved out. Ellwood’s bright and bustling storefront is now fortified by approximately 20,000-square feet of retail.
The lifestyle choices once considered popular mostly among fringe groups has become a standard, in consciousness and diet, and founder Rick Hood could be considered a pioneer.
“Ellwood’s is all about supporting local farmers, producers and vendors; healthy diets; and fostering community,” said Marketing Director Colin Beirne. “This resonates with the Richmond community because it is authentic and one of a kind.”
Beirne will be taking over the CBS 6 Instagram account to take you behind the scenes of a day at the local market.
He said that he loves his job “because of the mission and values of Mr. Hood.
“I believe in what we do and what we offer,” Beirne said. “We work very hard to provide the RVA community the most healthy, natural, unprocessed foods available. This takes a good amount of education on our part.”
“I am lucky,” Beirne added. “I go home every day feeling good about what we are doing and the impact Ellwood’s makes.”
#CBS6TakeoverTuesday is something we’ve done all summer, as a way to help tell community stories and create opportunities to engage.
At the end of the summer, you vote for which person or agency had the best takeover, and we award their charity of choice $200. Beirne chooses The Birdhouse Farmer’s Market, a seasonal market which serves the Randolph, Oregon Hill, downtown, Carver, Jackson Wad, VUU/VCU and Fan neighborhoods.
Make sure to follow along Tuesday, and ask Beirne any burning questions you may have about E.T.
