BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech Police Department has announced recent threatening emails against the university originated from a South American country.

The August 29 email messages came from four separate Gmail accounts with the subject, “warning.”

The email read: “I am here to inform that in the next couple of days I will break into the campus and will kill as many people as I can until the police arrives.”

The school was never on lockdown because of the threats, but it did lead some professors to cancel their classes and others to lock their doors.

The police department says they worked with state and federal partners in their investigation.

“Both federal and foreign authorities have been involved in the investigation and have now assumed primary roles.  The Virginia Tech Police Department continues to provide assistance to those agencies, as needed,” the department wrote in a statement.

Virginia Tech Police Department still advises community members to report suspicious behavior, including emails and social media posts that raise concern.

That information should be reported to the Police Department at 540-382-4343 or emailed tothreatassessment@vt.edu.
