HANOVER COUNTY, Va. — A Hanover man believed to be suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and reported missing Wednesday afternoon was found safe more than 40 miles away Thursday morning in Petersburg.

Cecil Snead, 77, was last seen driving away from his Pole Green Road home in a cream-colored Ford Econo van at about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

That van was parked at the Pep Boys on South Crater Road Thursday morning. One of the van’s tires was gone, indicating Snead was driving on a rim.

A Pep Boys customer Leroy Rhone who was at the shop early to get his vehicle serviced struck up a conversation with Snead and quickly realized something was not right.

He called police who were able to connect the dots and determine Snead was previously reported missing.

“Mr. Snead has been safely located and will be reunited with his family,” Hanover Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. James Cooper said. “The Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the media for quickly broadcasting this information and the public for sharing it on social media.”
