RICHMOND, Va. — Some 13,000 convicted felons in Virginia who have served their sentences are about to get their right to vote restored thanks to Gov. Terry McAuliffe.
The Washington Post reports the governor is expected to make the announcement Monday.
McAuliffe issued a sweeping executive order in April restoring voting rights to more than 200,000 felons.
Republicans argued the governor had overstepped his authority, and that he was trying to add Democrat-friendly voters to the rolls ahead of the November presidential election.
McAuliffe’s executive order also mistakenly included sex offenders and several convicted murderers.
GOP legislative leaders took him to court and won, but now McAuliffe is vowing to use an autopen to individually sign orders restoring voting rights.
While the first 13,000 are expected to be announced Monday, McAuliffe is also expected to reveal plans to restore rights to the remainder of the 200,000.
