RICHMOND, Va. -- A Richmond mother who does not want to be identified said she has dealt with many problems when it came to her daughter's school bus last year.

"I'm hoping that the first day of school turns out to be better than it was last year," said the mother.

Kenita Bowers, a spokeswoman for Richmond Public Schools, said a shortage in drivers can sometimes cause overcrowding and late buses, but said all bus routes will be covered for the start of the school year.

"It interferes with me being able to get to work on time because the buses are never on time," said one mother.

Chesterfield and Henrico schools are also recruiting bus drivers.

Like Richmond, both school systems said their routes will also be covered.

Josh Davis, Director of Pupil Transportation for Henrico Schools, said there is a number of things the school system does to prepare for the first day.

"We have our bus drivers rehearse their routes since some of them are new, and they may have new assignments," said Davis.

Davis also said there are training sessions to focus on relationships with the students and drivers.

On Sept. 1, Henrico will send out bus route information. There will also be a call center at the transportation office that parents can call with any questions.
