RICHMOND, Va. – Richmond police officers stepped up to help a handful of students look their best when they head back to school, during their annual 'Shop With a Cop' event at the Forest Hill Target.

The program, in conjunction with Richmond YMCA, took 34 Richmond-area kids on a shopping trip for the day.

“There are a lot of kids that are underprivileged and don’t have the opportunity to come out shopping every day,” said Richmond Police Chief Alfred Durham.

Durham said the program is a great opportunity to connect with the youth in Richmond and get them some new clothes for back to school.

“It’s more than just shopping, it’s building relationships,” he said. “It’s just another way that the Richmond Police Department are engaging our youth in the city.”

Durham said after a summer of police-involved violence across the county, building these relationships are more important than ever.

“That’s what it’s all about, smiles of kids’ faces and letting them know, we’re not the enemy, were their friends, we’re here for them,” said Durham. “And this is just another gesture to show that.”
