RICHMOND, Va. — Every Tuesday this summer, we invite one of our friends to take over the CBS6 Instagram account and share their world with you. This week the Richmond SPCA took over to show you what their world is like. You can see all the #CBS6TakeoverTuesday here.
It’s not all adorable puppies and kittens, though there are plenty of those creatures.he Robins-Starr Humane Center, on 2519 Hermitage Road, also hosts the Susan M Markel Veterinary Hospital and a big training area. In fact, with the transformations over the years, this place has become an island of amazing animal adoption and continuing care.

Good morning from the @richmondspca! Thank you to CBS6 for letting us take over your Instagram account for #CBS6TakeoverTuesday! While our adoption center and retail shop don't open until 11 a.m. today, animal care staff have been here since 8 a.m. walking dogs, cleaning kennels, changing litter boxes and giving pets the good mornings they deserve☀️ . . Today we'll show you insights into all the moving parts that allowed us to save the lives of more than 4,000 homeless pets last year. And, of course, we'll introduce you to some adorable dogs and cats awaiting adoption! 🐶😻🐾

Summertime means summer camps at the @richmondspca! Camp offerings change weekly and this week features our Kids and Canines camp where campers bring their family dogs to learn about shaping behaviors through positive reinforcement. 11-year-old Alexandra and her dog Karma practice on an agility course set up in our new Smoky's Training Center. Karma quickly took to the course while Alexandra practiced clicker training with lots of treats! #cbs6takeovertuesday

When most people think of the @richmondspca they first envision our adoption center. Our adoption team works hard to match pets with families and create lasting bonds. When foot traffic is low, adoption counselors love getting in extra snuggles with pets awaiting adoption before they leave the humane center for loving homes. Today Ellen gave some extra snuggles to Sunflower, a 2-year-old goofball available for adoption. You can find all pets currently awaiting homes on our website: www.richmondspca.org/adopt. #cbs6takeovertuesday #adopt #rescue #adoptrva

Have you been to the new Susan M. Markel Veterinary Hospital? It is located directly next door to our Robins-Starr Humane Center and provides full-service low-cost care to more than 7,000 pets annually including pets adopted from the Richmond SPCA, pets belonging to local municipal shelters and pets of guardians who qualify by income and locality. Our mission is to ensure that families of all means have access to treatment options they can afford for their feline and canine companions. 😽🏥💕 #cbs6takeovertuesday

While our adoption team is making matches in the adoption center, our admissions team is traveling to municipal animal shelters to transfer pets into our care whose lives may be at risk. Today we visited @richmondanimalcontrol and Chesterfield County Animal Control, both of which we visit weekly along with other area organizations. Once pets arrive at our humane center they are examined by our veterinary team. Our Cinderella Fund allows us to administer veterinary care to those that are sick and injured to rehabilitate them and ready them for adoption into loving homes. Visitors to our humane center are usually surprised by our large upstairs Track and Training Center. The space is used for training classes taught by our knowledgeable trainers as well as a place to work with dogs awaiting adoption. Our agility classes are especially exciting to watch as guardians guide pups through obstacles for time and accuracy! 🐶🎯 #cbs6takeovertuesday

Did you know know that cats breed seasonally? During the warmer months we care for more kittens than any other time. Foster care volunteers care for these orphaned kittens and sometimes their mothers until they are old enough to return to our humane center to be spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and made available for adoption. Sometimes the kittens require bottle feeding every 2 hours. But the chance to foster lives and watch them grow up is priceless. #cbs6takeovertuesday #rescue #kittens Ruben, pictured, is currently awaiting adoption in our adoption center.

Volunteers are the backbone of the @richmondspca. Last fiscal year 1,107 volunteers completed 4,904 volunteer shifts. Today Lauren spent time walking Huckleberry while Eric worked with his buddy Nelson. As a Green Team volunteer, Eric has received extensive training about dog behavior and body language and spends time working with dogs on behaviors that will help them be successful in their new homes. As you can see, it's not hard to fall in love around here! 💘 #cbs6takeovertuesday #adopt

Our work is hardly done by 5, but fortunately our offices are pet friendly. Duke, Dixie and Sam have all kept our CEO Robin Starr company at the office today. It's nice knowing our dogs aren't home alone when we're working long hours, and having pets in the office encourages us to pause and take breaks with them. #cbs6takeovertuesday #takeyourdogtoworkeveryday #destresswithdogs
