RICHMOND, Va -National Night Out is Tuesday, August 2 and police say they are focusing on strengthening the relationship between law enforcement and the community. Given recent violence involving police across the country, a lot of officers say this year's event is especially important.

Chesterfield, Henrico and Richmond will have block parties and cookouts where residents and police officers can engage and get to know each other a little better.

Police say the goal is for community members to meet police officers, ask them questions, talk about concerns and see how they can make their neighborhoods safer.

This year, Richmond police will take part in the department's 34th annual National Night Out.  The department is celebrating the improvements they have made since the 90's by focusing on community policing. That means building partnerships with businesses and residents.

“Our doors are open in the community and in the police department. Community policing is about talking about the issues, identifying the crime going on so we can address them and allowing the citizens to have a say as to how it should be addressed. Policing is all about responsibility,” said Sgt. Carol Adams with the Richmond Police Department.
