RICHMOND, Va. -- Senator Tim Kaine delivered doughnuts to Democratic party supporters on Monday morning, ahead of a campaign rally at Huguenot High School.

The former Virginia governor and current Democratic Vice President nominee returned home this weekend.

Kaine stopped by the Hillary Clinton campaign office in Richmond Monday morning – with lots of doughnuts to hand out from Sugar Shack. He shook hands and thanked staff for their hard work.

Kaine said he plans to speak about his Richmond roots at the rally Monday evening.

He said this election will carry a lot of gravity on shaping the future of the nation.

“We’re either going to build a community that is a more perfect union, that is a community of respect, or we're going to decide to do what has been done throughout American history, but never to our advantage -- fighting against each other, blaming each other pointing out,” Kaine said. “Just remember whoever is the victim this week it could be you next week.”

Virginia is a battleground state and one of 10 states that political experts said could be key in determining which candidate wins the presidency in November.

Political analyst Dr. Bob Holsworth said it's a big deal that Senator Kaine is in Richmond to boost support as he takes the national stage.

“On the Republican side, Donald Trump won the Virginia primary, but didn`t do well in Richmond and Northern Virginia,” Holsworth said. “He racked up huge margins in rural Virginia and he did pretty well with the military communities down in Hampton Roads, so it`s not surprising that their first trip to Virginia is going to be to a place where they think they`ll have a lot of support.”

The doors will open at 5p.m. Monday and Senator Kaine is scheduled to speak at 7 p.m.

Those who want to attend must RSVP online through the Clinton campaign website.

CBS 6 will have complete coverage of Kaine's speech on the CBS 6 news at 11.
