NEW KENT COUNTY, Va. — The driver of a tractor-trailer was killed Monday evening after running off the road and striking several trees while traveling I-64 in New Kent County.
The crash occurred at approximately 6:14 p.m., on I-64 east bound, at the 216.4 mile marker.
After an investigation, police said the 2008 Sterling tractor trailer was traveling east on Interstate 64 when it ran off the road to the left struck several trees an overturning down an embankment.
In addition to the fatality, one passenger was seriously injured.
The driver of the tractor trailer died at the scene. They were wearing a seatbelt. The passenger who was ejected was transported via med-flight to MCV with serious injuries.
The name of the victim has not been released, pending notification to next of kin.
The crash remains under investigation.
The right lane on I-64 east has reopened. The left lane remains closed. The backup is now two miles. VDOT warns drivers to continue to expect delays in the area during cleanup.
