65-year-old man who shot at Stafford officers dies from return fire

STAFFORD, Va. — A 65-year-old man who fired at deputies early Monday morning died when officers returned fire.

A citizen contacted the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office at approximately 2 a.m. Monday, after they witnessed a car crash on Cool Springs Road near Kings Highway.

The caller advised the vehicle had been traveling southbound at a high rate of speed, jumped the median and crossed into the northbound lanes, coming to a stop on the side of the road, according to the sheriff’s office. Deputies were subsequently dispatched to the accident.

Deputies were dispatched to the accident but found no driver or occupants at the scene.

Soon thereafter, deputies spotted  a man standing on the northbound side of Cool Springs Road a short distance away.

He was transported to Mary Washington Hospital where he was pronounced dead.  Sheriff’s Office deputies were not injured in the incident.
