RICHMOND, Va. -- Tim Kaine says he is one of 20 people in American history to have served as a mayor, governor and U.S. Senator. Now he's a contender for vice president.

Kaine was elected to the Senate in 2012. Prior to that, he served as Chairman of the Democratic National Committee, after his term as Virginia Governor.

He was first elected to office in 1995, when he served on the Richmond City Council. He was then elected as city mayor in 1998.  In 2002 he served as Lieutenant Governor.

Now, Hillary Clinton is spending time at home in New York, finalizing her decision for a running mate.

According to several Democrats familiar with the search, Clinton plans to formally introduce her Democratic ticket during a weekend campaign swing in Florida.

In recent days, sources say Kaine and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack have emerged the two leading vice president contenders

But several others -- including Labor Secretary Tom Perez, New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker, Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown and Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren still remain in the mix.

Kaine weighed in on his vice presidential prospects during an appearance before the Northern Virginia Chamber Of Commerce Wednesday.

"I went through the process in 2008,so I kinda know the rhythm of it, and I'm glad that I do but a decision is very late, I don't expect a decision will be made, announced until the weekend between the two conventions so and that's all I really know right now,” said  Sen. Tim Kaine/ (D) Virginia.  “It's wonderful to be mentioned but I love my job and trying not to overly think it but it's been a very exciting last few weeks."But when Kaine was asked if he had booked any flights to Florida over the weekend, he had a coy response.

"No flights booked but I'm checking the Greyhound schedule,” he replied.

The VP deliberations, by Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta, have been extraordinarily private.
