West Point woman swerved prior to fatal I-64 crash

JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. — Police identified the woman killed in a Tuesday afternoon crash on Interstate 64 as 36-year-old Heather Lee Edwards, of West Point.

Edwards lost control of her 2010 Hyundai Elantra while driving west, near the Route 607 exit, in James City County.

“[The car] swerved off the road and struck an embankment and then a tree,” a Virginia State Police spokeswoman said. “The vehicle caught fire and the driver was unable to escape from the vehicle, dying on scene.”

The accident closed westbound 64 following the crash.
