The Scott’s Addition brewery opened in April 2016 and has been jamming ever since.

We plan to do this every Tuesday this summer, and at the end, you vote for who hosted the best takeover day. Matt’s charity of choice is Child Savers, whose services offer reassurance, healing, and the skills necessary for children to achieve normal life and development.

Good morning y'all! Matt here with @theveilbrewing. We are thrilled to be the first participant in @cbs6's #CBS6takeoverTuesday. Today we are going to show you a behind the scenes look into a busy day of brewing, canning, and our weekly Tuesday FRESH can release. Today we are brewing our flagship Double IPA called Crucial Taunt. The video above is the first step in our brewing process called mashing in. This is where we mix malted barley and hot water together. Through this process enzymes in the grain convert starches into fermentable sugars. Wow! We have a new record here @theveilbrewing! Every Tuesday, starting at 4pm when we open our doors, we begin sales of FRESH cans packaged just hours before we open. We typically notice a line forms a few hours before we open. Today is a bit different. We are rereleasing a crowd favorite and also releasing 4 brand new beers. One of our loyal customers didn't want to miss the opportunity to get the beer she wanted. Morning light pours into one of the most important and exciting aspects of @theveilbrewing. Rarely seen by the general public, the open vessel shown here is called a koelschip(pronounced cool-ship). This traditional brewing vessel is often overlooked by most American commercial brewers. This vessel is used to create spontaneously fermented ales inspired by traditional Belgian lambic(spontaneously fermented oak aged sour beers). During the winter months only(when temperatures our near freezing over night), we pump near boiling wort(the sugar extract fermented that becomes beer) into this vessel and allow it to cool overnight(approx. 12-16hrs). Through this process, cold winter air flows through the fixed louvers and inoculates the wort with wild yeast/microflora from the night's air. We then drain the wort into used wine barrels and transport them to our off-site barrel storage facility. There the wort ferments and conditions in the barrels for 1-4 years. We then blend and bottle/keg the final product. Resulting in a acidic(sour), delicate beer fermented solely with Richmond wild yeast. The epitome of a local #RVA beer. We're currently canning FRESH cans of our double dry-hopped IPA called Master Master Shredder Shredder. These cans will go on sale from our tasting room in just a few short hours. We currently do not distribute our cans to ensure that the quality and freshness is carefully considered. The only place to get your hands on some 4-packs of cans is from our tasting room. One of our brewers Justin(@catboy_) lends a hand with the mashing out process. Motorized rakes help remove the spent grain from the mash tun(the vessel where the water and grain is mixed) for today's brew. We then donate the grain to a local farmer. He uses it for feed for his livestock. The donation of @theveilbrewing's spent grain has allowed Jules(our friend and farmer) to double the amount of livestock he cares for. Today #theveilbrewing we're brewing our flagship Double IPA called Crucial Taunt. This aggressively hopped beer is unique because of its intense hop flavor and aromatics, but it has significantly less bitterness than your average Double IPA. We feel as though bitterness hinders your ability to truly enjoy the flavor that hops can contribute to the beer. Seen in this picture here, we typically add heavy doses of pelletized hops post boil to ensure that we obtain maximum hop flavor with minimal bitterness. Resulting in a citrus forward, dank, smooth, intensely hopped Double IPA with little to no bitterness.
