Va. mother sentenced after 5-year-old found dead in septic tank

PULASKI COUNTY, Va. — A Pulaski County mother was sentenced in the death of her 5-year-old son inside of a courtroom Tuesday.

Ashley White was sentenced to one year and 11 months in prison in the death of Noah Thomas, who drowned in a septic tank on March 22, 2015.

White will be credited for time served and will be released in November.

She was convicted of three counts of felony child abuse and neglect in February. White was initially charged with felony murder, but that charge was lowered.

Noah’s father, Paul Thomas was sentenced to 15 months in jail for the same charges and was released from prison in May.

Prosecutors said then drowning happened because the boy had been left unattended by the couple.

White’s trial was not heard by jurors because the judge ruled the jury pool had been tainted by media coverage.
