WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Who needs superheroes when we have waiters?

A waiter turned in his best Captain America impersonation Sunday when he sprinted to the aid of an elderly tourist being mugged in Washington's posh Mount Vernon Square neighborhood.

The waiter, who works at the Dignitary Bar, raced across Massachusetts Avenue and took on the mugger, who had thrown the tourist to the ground and was threatening him with a knife.

Sporting not a cape but his all-black work uniform, the waiter kicked the mugger in the chest and tried to wrestle the knife away from him as he pulled him off the tourist.

The mugger got away -- with the tourist's wallet -- but lost his knife.

A diner sitting on the Dignitary Bar's patio captured the whole thing on a cell phone, CNN affiliate WJLA reports.

This hero is a reclusive one, however. He doesn't want to be identified since the mugger is still out there. But hopefully not for long: Police in D.C. have the knife and they took the waiter's shirt, hoping to get DNA to help them identify the criminal.
