CAROLINE COUNTY, Va. — “This was the most exciting day at work, by far.”
That was the assessment of clerk Christie Simmons hours after a black bear nearly walked into Bowling Green Town Hall.
Simmons said someone in the office spotted the bear walking outside the office window.
The bear, she said, then began to walk toward the office. It even put a paw on the front step. It was then a man in the office got up and slammed the front door shut.
The noise seemed to startle the bear, Simmons said. The animal retreated to a nearby tree and climbed up to safety.
Police officers and Caroline Deputies responded to the area.
After 30 to 45 minutes of watching the bear in the tree and keeping passer byes away, police began to back off.
Sensing its window to escape, the bear came down the tree, walked down the street and disappeared into the woods.
“Please remember, do not attempt to approach or feed any bear,” the Caroline Sheriff’s Office posted on Facebook.
