LEBANON, Ohio — An Ohio man was charged Tuesday after authorities say he shot his father and a sheriff’s deputy after a June dispute over hummus.

Warren County prosecutor David Fornshell says Mohammed Abdou Laghaoui has been charged with attempted aggravated murder, felonious assault and tampering with evidence.

The prosecutor says the June 9 incident “went downhill” after Laghaoui ate too much of his father’s hummus.

Authorities say Laghaoui’s brother then called 911 when the 19-year-old began to make threats.

Deputy Katie Barnes responded to the residence and left when Laghaoui’s father and brother declined to press charges, according to the Associated Press.

She was called back shortly afterward when Laghaoui’s brother told police Laghaoui punched his father in the face.

Upon her arrive back to the residence, Barnes was shot in the abdomen by what appeared to be an AK-47-style rifle, Warren County Sheriff Larry Sims said. She’s expected to recover.

The suspect’s father lost some fingers after suffering a gunshot wound to the hand during the dispute.

Laghaoui remains in jail on a $2 million bond. He could face up to 60 years in prison if convicted, according to prosecutor David Fornshell.
