SULLIVAN'S ISLAND, South Carolina -- An alligator was captured and euthanized after it was spotted swimming at Sullivan's Island beach, near Charleston, South Carolina.

Beach goers spotted the alligator just after 8 a.m., WCSC reported.

Police and a trapper with the Department of Natural Resources were called to catch the animal.

The Department of Natural Resources said this was the third alligator sighting on Sullivan's Island this June.

Experts called alligator sightings at the beach "not uncommon" because strong currents in nearby rivers sometimes moves the alligator to the beach side of the island.
