CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. — A Chesterfield man was sentenced to 50 years in prison after he admitted to downloading and uploading child pornography on the internet. Ronald Wilbur Ridout, Jr., 55, pled guilty to the crimes. He will serve a 12-year active prison sentence.

“Twelve years of active time, with an additional 38 years hanging over him, is more than justified given Ridout’s prior record of abusing children in central Virginia,” Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring said.

Ridout had previously been convicted of aggravated sexual battery and taking indecent liberties with a child in Henrico. In 2005, he was sentenced to four years in prison for that crime.

In February 2015, Chesterfield Police received a tip that someone had downloaded child pornography to a Chesterfield computer and uploaded it to a cloud-storage service.

“Further investigation revealed that the email address associated with the account to which the images were uploaded belonged to Ridout. Chesterfield Police also discovered that the images of child pornography were uploaded from Ridout’s residence in Chesterfield County,” a spokesman for the Attorney General said.

When police searched his home, Ridout admitted he downloaded the child pornography and uploaded it to the cloud-storage account.

He said he deleted the images a few days later.

“Following the search of his residence in this investigation, Ridout was charged with, and convicted of, failing to properly register as a sex offender in Chesterfield County Circuit Court, for which he was sentenced to 3 years in prison with 3 years suspended,” a spokesman for the Attorney General said.
