RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond City jail now has a LGBT liaison after Richmond Sheriff CT Woody appointed one of his staff members to the position.
Major James Jenkins, a 23-year veteran of the sheriff`s office, will serve as the new LGBT community liaison.
Sheriff Woody said the attack in Orlando is a reminder that the LGBT community continues to be a target, and he hopes that by establishing the liaison, the LGBT community will feel supported by local law enforcement.
“It is my hope that with this appointment, Major Jenkins will be able to foster a complete relationship between law enforcement and the LGBT community at large in the city of Richmond,” Sheriff Woody stated. “It is imperative that members of this community not only understand, but feel, that we stand in solidarity and support of them, particularly when crimes occur which impact our community.
“Further, I hope that by appointing a liaison, we will be able to make available our community based resources when needed.”
Major Jenkins has been with the Richmond City Sheriff’s Office for 23 years in various different departments and capacities.
“Because of his work in various community capacities, Major Jenkins was able to foster and build a pre-existing relationship with individuals in the LGBT community which makes him a natural fit for this important role,” the sheriff’s office said in a press release.
