HANOVER, Va. — In early May, 68 dogs — many of them puppies — were rescued after officers said the animals were in “unhealthy living conditions” at the breeder’s house.
Stephanie M. Saunders, 33, was found guilty this week, of five counts of cruelty to animals, five counts of inadequate care to animals and one count of selling an unweaned animal.
If no appeal is filed by Saunders, the adoption process for the dogs will start on Wednesday, June 29.
Although 68 were seized, 66 will be adoptable. Animal control said that although two of the dogs were at the home, they were not Saunders’ animals, and their owner surrendered them. They have already been adopted out.
The adoption process
The dog’s specific to this seizure case will not be available for view prior to the day of adoption.
Hanover Animal Control was very specific about the adoption process, due to an avalanche of calls.
Doors will be open from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. It is a first come, first serve process, and all requirements must be met to be considered an adoption candidate.
The adoption process and requirements:
- Have a current state-approved identification card or driver’s license
- Be at least 18 years old
- Pass an adoption screening
- Agree to the terms of the adoption application
- Not banned from future adoptions as a result of a court order
- Pay an adoption fee of $25
- Sign and agree to have the animal sterilized, rabies vaccinated and licensed within 30 days post adoption.
- Live within the greater Richmond Metro and surrounding areas
- If you rent, a signed and dated letter from your landlord/property owner or a copy of your lease stating you are allowed to own an animal.
- Only one animal will be adopted per household. No exceptions.
Proper documentation must be ready, or they will move on to the next person in line. No animal will be held or placed on reserve for any reason.
