CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- An investigation was underway to determine what sparked an early-morning fire at Monacan High School.
When Chesterfield firefighters arrived at the Smoketree Drive school, at about 1:30 a.m., smoke had filled part of the school building.
"Fire crews arrived to find smoke in the hallway adjacent to door 9. Upon further investigation, they located a smoldering fire in the ceiling above door 9 that they quickly extinguished," Chesterfield Fire and EMS spokesman Lt. Jason Elmore.
The fire did not appear to be suspicious, fire investigators indicated.
"Chesterfield County Fire Marshals determined the fire started in the insulation as a result of some maintenance work that was being done at the school earlier in the day," Elmore said. "There were no injuries reported and no damage was done to the building."
