RICHMOND, Va. — On a day when hundreds of Richmond-area fathers are working overtime to restore power to thousands of Virginians, Sugar Shack Donuts is trying to return the favor.

The local donut shop gave away approximately 300 donuts to Dominion workers Sunday Morning as they continue a busy work weekend after Thursday’s severe thunderstorms, which caused tremendous damage throughout Central Virginia.

Sugar Shack founder Ian Kelley said the decision was an easy one.

“I can’t imagine not being with my kids on Father’s Day,” he explained.

Kelley said once he saw all the damage Friday he reached out to Dominion to see how he could help.

“We just wanted to kind of help those guys out the best way we can,” Kelley said.

Sunday morning, Sugar Shack workers from the three area-locations woke up extra early to prepare donuts for Dominion workers and for Father’s Day, one of their biggest holidays.

Kelley said a lot of those workers were fathers themselves.

“They really understood,”Kelley said. “We are community oriented at Sugar Shack. That’s what we do.”

Volunteers delivered the donuts to the workers at their temporary mobile headquarters on Broad Street and at staging areas.

Kelley said they worked it out so they delivered between the 5 to 7 a.m. shift change where father’s working double shifts and coming in to begin their shift could be a part of it.

Kelley said he was inspired because, even on Father’s Day, the workers are not with family because their taking care of others.

This is his way of saying thank you and Happy Father’s Day.
