CAROLINE COUNTY, Va. -- Six people, including a child, were killed and 10 people were hurt when the van they were riding in overturned multiple times on I-95 in Caroline County early Saturday morning.
The Dodge van was traveling north when it ran off the road to the left, then swerved right across two travel lanes before hitting a Toyota Camry, Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Steve Vick said.
"After impact the Toyota spun out in the road, the Dodge van continued off the road to the right over correcting back left and overturning approximately five to six times," Vick said.
Four men, one woman and a chikd, were thrown from the van and died at the scene, Vick said.
The driver and nine other passengers were transported to Mary Washington Hospital and Spotsylvania Regional Hospital with serious injuries.
The driver of the 2016 Toyota was not injured.
Officials said the victims' names are being withheld pending next-of-kin notification.
The crash investigation is being assisted by the Virginia State Police Crash Reconstruction Team and currently remains under investigation.
The wreck, which happened at about 12:30 a.m., closed all lanes of I-95 north near the Ladysmith exit just north of the interchange. All traffic was re-routed off the interstate at Route 1 northbound at exit 110.
All lanes have since reopened.
