More than 173,000 customers without power after ‘historic wind event’

RICHMOND, Va. — A severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect for parts of the WTVR CBS 6 viewing area as a line of powerful storms tracks out of metro Richmond Thursday night.

Tornado warnings were issued for parts of the area Thursday evening, including Richmond, Hanover and Henrico counties as well as Charles City and New Kent counties. The warning for Charles City and New Kent expires at 10:15 p.m.

The strong storms knocked out power to more than 173,000 Dominion Virginia Power customers in Central Virginia as of midnight:
