HENRICO COUNTY, Va. - Henrico Police have reported an increase in car thefts over the past month.

Many of those thefts happened in the area between Chamberlayne Avenue and Creighton Road, according to Henrico Police spokesman Lt. Chris Eley.

The police department's media relations team created a PSA video to warn drivers about the thefts and to show how easily it can be to get your car stolen.

Eley said in most cases, there was no forced entry, which means drivers have left their car unlocked or running.

"What we like to stress to people is roll up your window, lock your doors, do not leave your keys in the car, and definitely do not leave your vehicle running unattended," Eley said.

He also reminded drivers to keep valuables out of sight, and to check the glove compartment.

"What people don’t realize is sometimes in your owner’s manuals they actually leave a valet key," he said. "People don’t realize you can go in the glove box and check the owner’s manual and there’s actually a valet key that you can use to start the engine and leave."
