JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. – Two people are hospitalized after a small plane crashed while landing near the Williamsburg-Jamestown Airport Saturday morning.
Fire officials said the incident happened at 9:40 a.m. when the plane crashed on the runway and then flipped upside down.
The craft ended up 100 yards south of the airport landing strip in a densely wooded area, WTKR reports.
Fire officials said the passenger manged to escape and call 911, but that the pilot remained trapped inside the plane, which was leaking fuel.
A bystander directed fire crews to the crash site at 9:46 a.m.
First responders were able to free the pilot from the wreckage and initiate medical treatment.
The pilot was flown by medical helicopter to Riverside Regional Hospital and the passenger was taken by ambulance to Riverside Regional Hospital.
Their identities have not yet been released and there has been no word on the extent of their injuries.
