RICHMOND, Va. — Richmond International Airport Police cited a man on state weapons charges after a gun was detected in his carry-on bags.

Transportation Security Administration officers found the loaded .380 caliber handgun during a June 6 search.

“Passengers who bring firearms to the checkpoint are subject to possible criminal charges from law enforcement and civil penalties from TSA up to $11,000,” TSA spokesperson Lisa Farbstein said. “This incident serves as a reminder that passengers are responsible for the contents of bags they bring to the security checkpoint.”

Guns and ammunition are not allowed in carry-on bags, the TSA reminded passengers. Those items can be packed in a checked bag as long as they are packed following TSA rules.

The TSA also advised passengers to look through bags thoroughly before coming to the airport to ensure there are no illegal or prohibited items.
