54-year-old man dies after being shot in Petersburg

PETERSBURG, Va. — Police are investigating a man’s shooting death in Petersburg Saturday night.

Officers were called to the 600 block of Virginia Avenue just after 10 p.m. for a report of a  man down on the sidewalk.

Officials said they found 54-year-old Michael Smith of Petersburg suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to his torso.

Smith was transported to Southside Regional Medical Center, but died of his injuries about an hour later, officials said.

“Detectives are still seeking information to determine what actually happened to Mr. Smith,” Petersburg police spokesperson Esther Hyatt said.
