DINWIDDIE COUNTY, Va. -- A Dinwiddie Middle School student was taken into custody Thursday for bringing a semi-automatic gun to school, according to school and law enforcement officials.

Charges against the eighth grade student were being finalized Thursday afternoon, Dinwiddie Sheriff's Office Captain William Knott said.

When students found out their classmate brought a gun to school, they went directly to the school principal, Dinwiddie School Superintendent Dave Clark said.

The principal and school resource officer went to the student's 2nd period class and took him to the office.

The student told the principal the gun was in one pocket and a magazine with ammunition was in another, Clark said.

Sheriff's investigators have not said why the student brought the gun to school.

The school system informed parents of the situation via phone call.
