RICHMOND, Va. -- Prior to a few days ago, this May was the second coolest on record.  Heat and humidity, which have been elusive for much of the month, returned to the area this week.  Highs leading into the weekend will be near 90° in the metro, making it the warmest weather for the year so far.

Prior to now, the warmest high was 87° on two dates in April.  The last time we reached around 90° was last September.

Historically, we usually have our first 90° around May 13.  In some of the past few years, we achieved that status by mid-April.

Temperatures will cool a little for the second half of the holiday weekend as we see additional cloudiness and the chance for some showers and thunderstorms.  As of now, we have the sixth wettest May on record, but that could change before June begins next week.
