RICHMOND, Va. – The new Saturday Family Classics series at the Byrd Theatre began May 21 with a trip down the Yellow Brick Road.
The Byrd Theatre in Carytown recently expanded its schedule to offer family movies. The new programming is featured at 10 a.m. on Saturdays.
Moviegoers voted on selections that ranged from the 1939 “The Wizard of Oz” to “The Boxtrolls” of 2014 – and many favorites in between.
The first movie screened was “The Wizard of Oz” and there was a special Mighty Wurlitzer concert complete with a sing-a-long of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.”
The next movie will be E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, on May 28.
Programming through July 2 is as follows below, and more movies will be added soon:
June 4- The Goonies
June 11- Babe
June 18 – The Sandlot
June 25 – Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
July 2 – Yankee Doodle Dandy
The new film series represents a new step toward the Foundation’s strategic vision “for expanded programming that engages diverse audiences throughout the Richmond and surrounding communities,” organizers wrote online.
