ASHLAND, Va. -- A black bear was spotted wandering around Ashland Thursday morning, according to Ashland Police.

"While investigating officers have not located a bear, several reports indicate the bear may be in the area between Route 1/South Washington Highway and Maple Street," an Ashland Police Facebook post advised. "Officers are continuing efforts to locate the bear and have been in contact with Hanover County Animal Control."

Police advised homeowners in the area to bring their pets inside as a safety precaution.

"Should anyone observe a bear remember to keep a respectful distance and give the animal plenty of space; bears generally move on quickly," police said. "This is a common occurrence and we ask our community to contact local police if anyone encounters this bear."

Christine Marie‎ sent video to WTVR CBS 6 that shows a bear crossing Cedar Lane is Ashland on Wednesday evening.

Marie said the video was recorded by her 14-year-old son, Brandon Rubcobo, around 6 p.m.

'Where is that bear going?' Brandon asks.

At one point the bear stops running through a field and looks over at the boys recording the video.

"God, he sees us," Brandon said. "He's like, 'I don't care.'"

The teens speculate that the bear might be in search of bamboo.

If you spot a bear in your area, snap a photo or video (if you can do so safely), and send it to pics@wtvr.com. Depend on CBS 6 News and WTVR.com for the most complete coverage of Bear Watch 2016.
