8-hour standoff ends at Glen Allen hotel

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. – The standoff at Glen Allen hotel ended peacefully. Henrico Police sent the following update at about 1 a.m.

On May 17, 2016 at 2315 hours the adult male that was threatening suicide was taken into custody for a Mental Health Evaluation by Henrico Police without incident or injuries to anyone involved.

Henrico Police investigated after the man threatened suicide at Hampton Inn and Suites hotel, near Virginia Center Commons Mall. The hotel is located at 1101 Technology Park Dr. in Glen Allen.

The incident started Tuesday evening around 3:30 p.m.  and continued inside the hotel until after 11 p.m.

SWAT teams, police and fire crews spent about eight hours inside the Hampton Inn and in contact with the man, who was holed up inside of one of the rooms.

The man involved had allegedly texted family members and threatened to harm himself, police said. One of those family member then called police, which eventually brought them to the hotel.

Police evacuated the floor where the man was staying during the standoff. Witnesses said it was the 4th floor.

"The SWAT team escorted me from my room around 7:45 p.m.," one guest explained via email. "[They] told me I had 30 seconds to grab what I could.  Of course I left all my important items in the room - especially my medications."

The guest said  Hampton Inn gave him a voucher to stay at a hotel across the street.
