RICHMOND, Va. – The congregation from Fourth Baptist Church in Richmond honored law enforcement with a special service Sunday morning.

In recognition of National Police Appreciation Week, more than 40 officers, including Richmond Police Chief Alfred Durham, worshiped to honor fallen officers as well as salute those who are currently serving.

“It’s good to have a prayer for our officers,” Durham said. “We have a dangerous job as you know in the city. The officers come to work every day, and make that sacrifice and insure the safety of our citizens and to safeguard the community.”

A candlelight vigil was held along with a worship service.

“One of the things we did was read the list of names of the officers who made the ultimate sacrifice here in the city of Richmond,” Durham explained.

Officers also lead in scripture readings, prayers and some officers even sang solos.

“It means a lot for our officers sitting in the congregation to hear the words from the pastor, and the music from the choir. And just saying thank you. The community and his church appreciates the things that our police officers do in the community.

Rev. Emory Berry, who organized the event, said he thought the service would be a great opportunity for police and the church to join forces to bridge the gap with the community.

“Blue lives matter. Black lives matter. Brown lives matter. White lives matter. All lives matter,” Emory said.
