Civil War cannonball could create ‘loud boom’ in Prince George, Hopewell

Posted

FORT LEE, Va. — If you hear a loud boom in Prince George County and Hopewell Monday, it could have come from Fort Lee.

Fort Lee Police and an Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit have responded to an apparently “undetonated Civil War-era cannonball” discovered on a training range Monday morning.

“The area is secure and an Army EOD team from Fort Belvoir is en route to safely dispose of the 4-inch shell,” a Fort Lee spokesman said. “Prince George County and Hopewell residents living near training areas adjacent to River Road may hear a loud boom if on-site detonation of the cannonball is determined to be the safest method for disposal.”

Fort Lee is otherwise operating business as usual.

This is a developing story.
