LOS ANGELES -- The California Highway Patrol is closely watching social media to identify people shown skateboarding on busy freeways across southern California.

The new #freewaychallenge "trend" shows skaters riding along cars in busy rush hour traffic. Pro-skater Nakel Smith is shown in one of the videos riding on Highway 110.

If identified, skaters participating in the "challenge" could face citations.

"You don't know what the other car is going to do... or if a motorcycle is passing. They could strike you and kill you," Officer Edgar Figueroa told KTLA.

Nakel Smith declined KTLA's request for an interview, however his manager told KNBC Nakel is not encouraging anyone to participate in the "challenge."
