RICHMOND, Va. — On Wednesday, April 27, fans will have not one, but two opportunities to see the 1984 movie “Purple Rain” on the big screen. In fact, there are four opportunities over the next week for fans to catch a screening of it.

The movie stars Prince as The Kid, in a seemingly autobiographical tale of a young musician trying to contend with a rival singer in the thriving Minneapolis club scene. “Purple Rain” was released in 1984, shortly after Prince’s 1982 album, “1999,” thrust him into the spotlight.

The Goochland Theater plans to show the Oscar-winning movie on Wednesday, April 27 and Thursday, April 28.

There will be a special, retro pre-show featuring Prince footage, according to organizers. The gates open at 6 p.m. both nights and the showtime is at 8:05 p.m.

Arriving early is recommended, and status updates are typically posted on their Facebook page to apprise moviegoers of the traffic.

The cost is $6 for adults/$2 for kids age 4-11.

The historic Byrd Theatre in Carytown will screen the movie Wednesday, April 27 at 9:30 p.m. and then again on Saturday, April 30 at midnight.

“This legendary rock musical and semi-autobiographical, even prophetic, story of Prince’s rise to super stardom opened on July 27, 1984. One month later, Prince Roger Nelson became the first artist to ever have the top movie, album, and single at the same time,” reads a post on the theater’s Facebook page.

Tickets will only be available at the Byrd 30 minutes before the movie starts, for $1.99.  Additionally, theater reps asked that those attending wear purple to honor the legendary icon. The Byrd Theatre is located at 2908 W. Cary Street in Richmond.

There was a full house at the historic Ashland Theater Saturday night, April 23, for two screenings of “Purple Rain” and CBS 6 was there to capture the excitement.
