Driver who lost consciousness in UVA Baseball team’s bus crash dies

MIAMI — The driver who lost consciousness while driving the team bus for the University of Virginia Baseball team has died. Bernard Martin, 72, died at Mercy Hospital in Miami after the medical emergency Thursday evening.

The incident happened on US Route 1 en route to the team’s hotel for a weekend series against the Miami Hurricanes. Members of the UVA coaching staff jumped in to gain control of the bus as the accident happened.

Once stopped, coaches administered CPR to Martin until paramedics arrived. He later died at the hospital.

“Our condolences to family of Bernard Martin, our bus driver who passed away Thursday,” UVA Baseball said on their Twitter page. “He was a great friend and supporter of UVA Athletics.”

The school’s athletic department offered its condolences writing:

“We are saddened by the passing of Bernard Martin, an outstanding driver for Abbott Trailways, who provided such great service to many of our athletic teams. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and colleagues. He was a true professional and great friend to many of our coaches, staff and student-athletes.”

No members from the team and coaching staff was injured during the crash Thursday.
