Maness, 34, of Providence Forge, was the random shooting victim of Brian Hicks, according to investigators.

In a rambling jailhouse interview, the 55-year-old retired Air Force veteran told WTKR he killed Maness, a stranger to him, because God told him to do it.

"I'm so mad at that guy for just picking someone out and randomly killing him," Gabriel’s father Jim Maness said. "If he would've done it to someone else I would just be as furious, but that was my son. And my granddaughter doesn't have a daddy and wants to know who's gonna be her daddy."

Jim Maness said his son adored his wife. The couple met 12 years ago while in the Army.

"When Kristy called the whole world stopped it was him and Kristy," said Jim Maness.

Kristy, now eight-months pregnant, is left to raise their children alone.

"I thought I knew a lot of heartache and pain in my life but there's nothing like this," Jim Maness said about his son' s murder.

A viewing for Gabriel Maness was scheduled for Friday at 5 p.m. at the Vincent Funeral Home located at 9923 Pocahontas Trail in Providence Forge. A funeral was scheduled for Sunday.
