CBS 6 honored with six Regional Edward R. Murrow awards, including ‘overall excellence’

RICHMOND, Va. -- WTVR CBS 6 has been honored with six Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards, the most of any television station in Virginia.

WTVR, in operation since April 22, 1948, was awarded “overall excellence” for small market television station in 2016. The other awards are listed below.

Feature reportingThe Lost MLK Tapes, about an educator from Chesterfield who recently became the proud owner of a one of a kind recording, was written by reporter Greg McQuade, and shot and edited by Chief Photographer Brad Wilson.  [Click here to watch/read]

Hard News: "Face to face with a Killer" by reporter Laura French and photojournalist Chris Munnings is an interview with the woman who spotted murderer Jesse Matthew Jr. in Texas. There was a nationwide manhunt for Matthew, who was just convicted of the murder of two Virginia college students.  He may never have gone before a judge had it not been for the actions of one quick-thinking Texan.[Click here to watch/read]

Use of Video: A montage of inspiring stories that Chief Photographer Brad Wilson worked on for CBS 6, called "Human Kindness and Triumph."

Sports Video: "My Main Man Cody," another collaboration between Greg McQuade and Brad Wilson, covered the story about how a student with autism inspired the Thomas Dale football team to an improbable win. [Click here to watch/read]

Writing:  Reporter Greg McQuade, a Massachusetts native, has been with CBS 6 since Oct. 2000. He has won 23 Murrow awards, in addition to multiple Emmy honors. McQuade features a local hero each week in his series "Heroes Among Us.

"The 23rd Award is as special as the first," McQuade said.

“Storytelling is something I take seriously," he added. "Crafting tales featuring Virginians who make a positive impact on our community is the best part of my job. I look forward to sharing more ‘Heroes Among Us’ stories with our viewers for the foreseeable future.”
